The Skin Motion app is in development and is scheduled for release in June 2017. Our company was founded after Nate made a video of a Soundwave Tattoo on himself and the video went viral with over 14million organic views and more than 240,000 shares in one week. We began to receive messages from hundreds of people who wanted one so we launched Skin Motion to make Soundwave Tattoos possible for them. We’ve answered some of the most asked questions below. If you have any other questions please contact us.
How does a Soundwave Tattoo work?
A person uploads or records the audio they want into the app or website. We generate the Soundwave from that. The person takes the generated Soundwave to a tattoo artist from our Artist Network. Artists need to be licensed in order to make sure they understand the limitations of the technology and how that applies to tattoo placement, size, and changes to the design of the tattoo from a simple Soundwave to make it more custom or elaborate on it for the person. Once the Artist does the tattoo, a photo of the tattoo is uploaded to our platform. Our patent pending platform processes the audio and tattoo and adds it to the app. When the user opens our app and points the camera on their mobile device at the tattoo, it recognizes the shape of the Soundwave and plays back the audio.
When can I get one?
We're still in development on our app. We have some great ideas that we will be sharing on our Facebook Page over the next few weeks. The app is scheduled for release in Summer 2017.
Where can I get one?
I work at/own a tattoo studio and I am interested in Soundwave Tattoos. How can I get involved?
We are registering the first 100 tattoo artists to the Skin Motion Artist Network. You can apply to become a member of the Soundwave Tattoo Artist Network. To become a member an Artist must have a website which has their name, portfolio, and a way to schedule a tattoo, and at least one social media account that they use to communicate with their customers. Artists portfolios must also reflect the level of quality necessary for the tattoo to age well and ensure compatibility with the Skin Motion app.
How do they hold up over time?
Like any tattoo, there will be normal aging of the tattoo over time. The quality of the tattoo is the responsibility of the person who gets it. Choosing the right artist and following proper healing procedure is the most important factors in the quality of a tattoo. We are going to qualify our network of tattoo artists to ensure they are going to do a high quality tattoo and if we get any complaints they will be removed from our partner network.
How is it affected by body hair?
There is a certain tolerance to hair that the app will allow for thin or light hair. For thicker hair or very hairy areas the app may not work. The app needs to be able to see the tattoo more than it sees the hair. For this reason, we only recommend getting a Soundwave Tattoo in an area where there is minimal, thin or light colored hair.
How does the Skin Motion app work? What about in 10 years?
Our patent pending platform is built in the cloud and engineered with modular components so that everything is interchangeable. The speed that new api's, frameworks, codecs and devices are coming out means that by preserving all our data, we will be able to deliver it through the most advanced distribution channels and interfaces as augmented reality technology advances.
I have a wave form tattoo already, can I use your app to view it?
Although this wasn't a part of our initial design, we are working to accommodate your existing wave form tattoo. We have a lot of testing to do before we can make this available. Please follow us on Facebook and Twitter, or sign up for our mailing list at the bottom of this page to find out when this becomes available.
Are there any limitations for what sound I can get?
Users will be required to click an agreement that says they own the copyright to whatever audio file they upload and they person will have agreed to the these terms again before they pay. If we receive a copyright take-down notice we are required to remove the audio/tattoo from the system. We have implemented a 1 minute limit to the audio, but the best Soundwaves are between 5-20 seconds of someone talking.
Can I get my favorite song?
Assuming you own the copyright (see question above), Most modern music has been compressed and maximized in a process called Mastering that attempts to increase the volume of quiet parts of a song and decrease the louder parts. While this makes music sound better coming from a cell phone or laptop speaker, it means the Soundwave does not have the "peaks and valley" that older music, or audio recorded of a person talking may have. The "peaks and valleys" are what make the Soundwave Tattoo so interesting to play back.
